Bicycles in our roundabouts
The warm weather has brought out a surge in bicyclists enjoying our roadways and residents have expressed concern about safety in our roundabouts, especially when it comes to bicyclists and vehicles. Since Somersett Parkway is a city street, we checked with Reno Direct for guidance on the rules. They referred us to this publication from RTC Washoe which spells out the rules for drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians.
Here’s what the section on bicyclists says:
- Bicyclists can ride the roundabout either using the traffic lanes or the pedestrian walkways.
- Bicyclists follow the same rules as vehicles when using traffic lane.
In Somersett, the bike lanes do not continue into the roundabouts. There are signs before and after each roundabout showing bicyclists where to enter and exit the sidewalk. If a bicyclist chooses to stay on the roadway, it is important to remember that according to traffic code, cyclists MUST observe all of the rules vehicles do. So please, whether you are in a car or on a bicycle, slow down, yield to vehicles already in the roundabout, stay in the proper lane and use signals when appropriate.
